Will history be repeated? Barcelona and Atletico Madrid meet each other in UEFA Champions League quarter-final after three years. In 2013/14 season, Rojiblancos reached the semi-final thanks to an important tie (1-1) in Camp Nou and a close victory (1-0) in Vicente Calderon, now they hope to replicate that history. The statistics are against them, but three years ago they won while Barca seemed the favourite.
Since Luis Enrique took over Gerardo “Tata” Martino on the Barca bench, Blaugrana have won all of the six encounters against Atletico (four matches in the league and two games in the Cup). The Spanish coach is looking for extending his record against Diego “Cholo” Simeone.
According to SPORT, the newspaper based in Catalonia, with 25 goals in 27 matches, including three hat-tricks, Atletico is Messi’s favourite opponent. Their current goalkeeper Jan Oblak has been scored on four times by the Argentinian, and his substitute Miguel Moya one time. The Golden Ball winner has got at least one goal in all competitions that he has confronted Atletico.
Simeone’s side have had the best defensive line in La Liga and have only conceded 12 goals in 29 games, but four of them have been against Barca which have had the best offensive numbers with 84 goals so far. The Spanish duel between excellent defenders of Rojiblancos and Blaugrana outstanding attackers would be really exciting.
However the statistics are in the favour of Barcelona, but according to SPORT, 77% of their fans are not happy with this draw, and it means Atletico is considered as a dangerous rival for the Champions League holders.
Barca will host Atletico on April 5 with the return leg in Madrid taking place on April 13.
